Award-winning grower says you can’t beat state for quality YOUcan’t gopastthe green peppery olive oil producedin Tasmania when it comes tothe best quality, olive grower Carol O’Neill says. She shouldknowgiven Abbotsham-basedCradleCoast Olives, run byCarol and husbandTony,hasproduced multiple award winners, including an oil awarded Australian Olive Oil ofthe Year two years ago. And thisyear the O’Neills produced ahigher yield of oil after harvestfrom thesame amount of fruit as last year. The O’Neills have justfinished thepressing. ‘‘We got more oil from our fruit this year and because we were pressingfor others we know others didtoo,’’ Mrs O’Neill said. Aresultshe put down tothe olive trees being older and a new press helped release the oils. It wouldn’t be that far away before Tasmanian olive oil would beexported overseas and more could be sent interstate to spice uptheir oils. ‘‘We’vegottoget tothe quantitytobe able todothat,’’ Mrs O’Neill said. ‘‘Our oils are much spicier and more pepperythan oilsproduced interstate and theybuy Tasmanian oils toblend with theirs.’’ TheAdvocate went lookingfor the good oil on Tassie olive oil after a recent survey of the olive oils on supermarket shelves revealedqualityissues, especially with oilsimported fromSpain and Italy. Mrs O’Neill saidimported oils didn’thave to prove they were extra virgin when they come into Australia but Australian oils do have tobetested. She saidwhile Tasmanian olive oils were more expensive at upto $100 a litre, because ofthe good quality,you don’thave to use as much. ‘‘You rubit on a roast or sprinkle iton fish and chicken andit’s beautiful —you don’t need any other condiments.’’ Tasmanian olive oil is fetching up to$190 alitre offthe shelf of some upmarket Sydneydelis. AccordingtoaDPIWEreport, Rob Goddard,theTasmanian board member oftheAustralian Olives Association, saidhe expectedthelocal yield to increase dramatically. Cool climates generally produce extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)with thelowest saturatedfat and the highest level of oleic acid, a natural mono-unsaturated fat found in olives. True EVOO must have a free fatty acidlevel lessthan 0.8%, and the InternationalOlive Oil Council stipulates that oleic acid in EVOO hastobe between 55% to83% within thefattyacid profile. Some Tasmanian oils exceed the maximum benchmark of oleic acidfor classification EVOO,leadingtosouth-east grower Virgin Gold Olives patentingthe term Ultra Virgin Olive Oil. Tasters use the Australian Olive Oil Association’s 20-point sensory scoring system, under which a bronze medal score is 13-14 .5 , a silver medalis 15-16.5 and gold is 17 or higher.“Extra virgin’ qualitytest results for oils without a tick in this column fall outside IOC limits for extra virgin classification. Source:www.choice.com.au Standard needed to ensure oils stack up CONSUMER groupChoice says there shouldbe a mandatory Australian standardfor olive oils labelled ‘‘extra virgin’’ to ensure they met purityandquality requirements. Itcomes after Choice tested 28 brands of extra virgin olive oil soldin Australian supermarkets. The survey foundhalfdid not meet acceptedinternational standards. Ofthe oils that failed, most were importedfrom Italy and Spain. Nine of the top 10 tasting brands were Australian and rated silver or bronze medal class, accordingtoAustralian Olive Association show judging criteria. ‘‘With theabsence of any mandatory standardin Australia you have totrust that oil labelled ‘‘extra virgin’’ isthe realdeal. This means it hasbeen mechanically extractedfrom qualityolives without theuse of heat or chemical processes and haslow acidity.Unfortunately, thisisn’t alwaysthe case,’’ says Choice spokesman Brad Schmitt. The tests were designed to check for signs of fruitdamage, poor harvesting methods, poor storagebefore and after processing and bottling and whether there had been any bleaching or deodorising or deterioration due to ageing.
