MFAA Prosper : Mortgage and Finance Brief 06
to a better place, where they’re more in control”. Even if that means sending them away without a home loan? “Yes, there would be times that I’ve done that,” she says. “But usually I’d help them put a strategy in place so the dream doesn’t die.” You could call that “responsible lending”; the goal of Australia’s new national consumer credit laws. The sense of mission in her work hints at her long-term goal of becoming an ordained minister, for which she’s completed her studies. Horan is a very active member of the Hawkesbury Christian Church in north west Sydney, and sees the parallels. “There’s a lot of ministry that goes on within the church,” she says. “We’re always looking at where people have a need across the spectrum of life. Not just a spiritual need but any need.” As a broker she sees people in need, “people who are overwhelmed by life, where, through perhaps a lack of education, life has really got the better of them”. That brings us to another mission: financial education in schools. “I’m hoping, in conjunction with another person, to write a program that we can get put into the schools, where Year 9-10 kids go through an eight-week module of ‘practical’ finance,” she says. It would cover everything from how interest works to what’s involved in home ownership. After all, even primary school children run up mobile phone bills these days. And her capacity to educate is also being recognised at Aussie, where she’s now stepping into a sales academy role, training new brokers and helping them to realise their own long-term goals. “ I love helping people get where it is that they see themselves going. I like being the person in the middle of whatever their goal is. I love facilitating that.” InProfile Mor tgage & Finance brief | 41
