MFAA Prosper : Mortgage and Finance Brief 13
36 Mortgage & Finance brief people CURRENTLY, WOMEN MAKE up more than 60% of graduates entering the financial services industry. The encouragement and development of women in the sector reflects well on the industry as a whole and International Women’s Day, on 8 March, is a day to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements in securing basic human rights for women around the world. Run by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, the event aims to highlight the enormous contribution women make to local and global economies, as well as to break down the barriers to true equality in all social spheres. Economic empowerment is the theme for 2012, focusing on every woman’s right to education, meaningful employment, as well as land and business ownership. The day will highlight the issues that continue to hinder women’s economic freedom. Statistics show that women earn less than 10% of the world’s wages, yet they perform more than 66% of the world’s work. Women also make 70-90% of household buying decisions. Kriti Colless, the MFAA’s Executive Director of Marketing and Membership, says, “The importance of women in this industry cannot be underestimated. It’s very encouraging to see increasing numbers of women applying for membership to the MFAA. Statistics show that women are key influencers and researchers in mortgage-buying decisions, it’s imperative that brokers communicate strongly to this vital demographic.” ••• International Women’s Day Get InvolveD Show your support for International Women’s Day and help raise money for the Partners Improving Markets program by hosting or attending an event; donating; or simply wearing a purple ribbon on 8 March.
